Unfortunately, most cases of sleep apnea remain undetected in the United States. Only 10% of adults with sleep apnea are diagnosed. Moreover, only 10% of physicians inquire about the related symptoms and rarely ask their patients a very telling question — if they've ever fallen asleep at the wheel.

Within the industry

Commercial drivers who do suffer from sleep apnea are reluctant to report it. The reality is they are either unaware of the symptoms, or they conceal or deny the fact that they are experiencing excessive drive-time drowsiness in fear of los ing their job.

Additionally, there are additional negatives associated with treatment — screening for the disorder can be imprecise, testing and treatment is perceived as too expensive, and diagnosis often complicates DOT certification.
